I'm using the latest Commerce Kickstart (ver 2.x) and I have updated colorbox 7.x-2.4 so that it does in fact work (7.x-2.3 shipped with the kickstart and did not work out of the box).

Anyway, I do have colorbox working correctly and I would like to view my product display within a colorbox popup rather than navigating away from the catalogue page to the product display page.

This seems to me like it would be a popular way to do it but I can't seem to find any trace of anyone doing it or how they are doing it. I don't mind pioneering something like this myself but first I thought I would check and see if anyone is handling their product display this way and if so how they recommend doing it.
