Why am I having this problem adding a category?

Today, I just downloaded and set up my first Commerce Kickstart site. I added a product type to the site. But when I go to add a product, it does not show the product type I just added, which I don't understand. It only shows the default product types (Bags & Cases, Drinks, Hats, etc.).

I thought I may need to add a category, but when I click the Add categories button, I get an error message that fills the screen and says "Additional uncaught exception thrown while handling exception." It is followed by a heading that says "Original" with some code underneath and another heading that says "Additional" with more code underneath. It's all in black text on a white background.

Can anyone help me with this?

I think this is the same problem (minus the uncaught exception) that Jim Ruby asked on October 16, 2012 titled "why don't the form come up when I add a product" in this discussion area.

Product types are not Product displays, but there doesn't seem any obvious way of creating a new Product display. I think this screen was accessible in DC1, but seems to have been hidden in DC2 as it doesn't appear in any menu.

Somehow, this has to be cleared up. And, why are Taxonomy vocabularies called Categories? No apparent reason for that.
