I created a sales tax. At first it had no conditions, so it should apply to every order. It does not show up. I added a condition - state - following the instructions in the video. It still doesn't show up.
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong since at a minimum the unconditional sales tax should show.
I found the problem. Apparently someone who had worked on the site before me had disabled the sales tax rule. So it didn't matter how many sales taxes I added, none of them were ever going to work because the rule was disabled.
So if you run into this problem, go check your rules listing and see if you need to enable the rule.
Thank you for this post! I find myself in the exact situation -- no sales tax in checkout. I checked the sales tax rule to make sure it was enable. It was. I even disabled it and enable it again, just to make sure. I am new to this forum, and if someone can direct me to IRC channel, I would appreciate it.

I'm not sure the Q&A is really appropriate here, as it's not meant for back and forth issue research. I can verify that sales taxes are in fine working order, with no extra work required for them to display beyond adding a new sales tax rate. But I can't deduce from your question where exactly you're expecting them to show up or what might be the matter. The best channel for support for you would be the IRC channel where folks should be available to discuss the issue in real time.
Thanks. I was looking for an IRC channel, but didn't find a link on it before I had to leave town. It's my preferred way of doing it. Would you be able to point me in the direction of that, as I can't seem to find it on the links in the menu.
I'd expect it to show up at some point when you're checking out, but it doesn't show up anywhere on ours. You can go all the way to Paypal and never have sales tax show up.
