I am using commerce kickstart , including the existing product catalog. I am trying to add a product, but the only option I get is to include it into one of the existing product displays (as drinks , hats etc.) I am trying to add a product and then create a content type with a reference to it and then a line item type (as in the donation model) .

You should start out with Kickstart 1 for the donation model. All of Randy Fay's screencasts are from Kickstart 1.
Kickstart 1 is the same "core" of modules called "Commerce" -- Kickstart 2 is just a number of "glue" modules that pigeon hole the software release to target physical online sales. Unfortunately, Kickstart 2 does it's best to "hide" functionality from the menu system at the top of the installation, which makes it hard to work outside the prescribed situation.

Thanks a lot. I have been messing around with this for few weeks- actually I didn’t know there are few versions of the commerce model. I do hope, I am the only one that works on the wrong version. Maybe the commerce Guys should underline this issue more carefully.

I am tried to download few versions of commerce 1 to my drupal 7.21 insulation but I am getting a long list of errors. What should be the set ups for drupl and commerce to get the same system Randy Fay is using in his presentations?

Thanks,But this doesnt help me in this case. i would like to create a product that is kept in the database and after that create a content type that referes to it.the kikstart setup doesnt enable to do so. i ahve watched Randy Fay donation's screencast and can see that his setup and adminstration are not the same.
Can you please help me with that?
