Kickstart 2, checkbox for create product display when creating variation type does not create any display

The checkbox when creating a variation type says:
create matching product display
But after creating the variation type, and creating a couple of products of that type, I do not see any product display.
Where should I look for a product display?
The documentation for Kickstart 2, on product displays... is missing and falls back to the Kickstart 1 documentation. Does this mean I need to make a product display? If so... there should not be a checkbox asking if I want one automatically created.
