Theming Product Display (attributes)

Is it possible to achieve a similar layout as this site:

http://www.makr.com/

If it is possible, can someone guide me on where should i start?

What required is that the tiled icons should be the product attributes instead of the actual product.

Attached is what I have so far for Product display. The Artwork dropdown selector is in ajax. I want to theme the dropdown into tiled thumbnails (similar to makr.com). Can this be done?
